Ted Turner apologized on his own Cable News Network for calling Christianity "a religion for losers."

Turner, appearing on CNN's "Crossfire" program Tuesday night, said he was speaking off the top of his head when he made the comment.

"I want to officially apologize to all the Christians for saying that," Turner said. "That was a very uncalled-for statement. At one time or another, I've offended just about everybody. I was making a talk off the cuff when that just popped out, and I feel very sorry for it."

Barbara Bush borrowed a line from pop star Michael Jackson as she exhorted black high school graduates in Washington Wednesday to start with "the man in the mirror" if they want to make the world a better place.

She urged the 287 Dunbar High School graduates to "make three very special choices."

"Believe in something bigger than yourself. Get involved in some of the big ideas of our time, whether it's cleaning up the environment, eliminating hunger and homelessness," she said.

"As a recent young visitor to the White House wrote, decide to start `with the man in the mirror. . . . If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change,"' she said.

Georgette Mosbacher, socialite wife of the U.S. secretary of commerce and head of a cosmetics company she owns, was robbed of $30,000 in jewelry and cash outside her New York hotel room by a man with a submachine gun.

Mosbacher said she gave the robber her jewelry and handbag, then escaped when an elevator opened and she jumped in.

The robber fled. No arrests have been made, police said Wednesday.

Doug Kershaw, the Cajun fiddler-singer, spent a few hours in jail before posting $132,000 bail to cover alimony he allegedly owes his ailing ex-wife.

Kershaw, the 53-year-old "ragin' Cajun" best known for his 1961 song "Louisiana Man," was jailed Friday after performing at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville . A contempt hearing was set for July 18.

Kershaw's former wife, Elsie Griffin Kershaw, 72, is destitute and in ill health, said her attorney, Jack Norman Jr.

According to a petition filed by Norman, Kershaw had avoided payment of $750 a month in alimony when the couple divorced in 1975 after seven years of marriage.
