Polly Daniel Smith, 72, of 1214 Ashland Ave., died Tuesday, June 12, 1990 in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She was born in Bedford County June 22, 1917, a daughter of the late Nathaniel Nelson Daniel and Ellen Witt Daniel. She was retired from the Bedford City Police Force after 23 years of service and was an active member in Main Street United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Harry W. Smith; a daughter, Barbara S. Garrett, Chester, N.Y.; two sons, Harry Allen Smith, Botetourt; James P. Smith, Roanoke; two sisters, Thelma D. Clark, Florine D. McCleary, both of Roanoke; a brother, Nelson Daniel, Lewisburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Greenwood Cemetery Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Lewis Carson and the Rev. Reginald H. Potts, III officiating. The family suggests those wishing to make memorials consider the Main Street United Methodist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
