MAGAZINE ARTICLE FEATURES FEMALE GOLF PRO FROM ROANOKE

Liz Waynick, the only woman head golf professional from Roanoke, was featured recently in an article on women golf pros in the spring issue of Arizona Golf Magazine.

Waynick, a star athlete and golfer at Patrick Henry High School, is head professional at the Briarwood Country Club in Sun City, Ariz. She has held the position since 1987, when at the age of 26, she was the youngest woman club professional of any PGA club in the nation.

A 1978 PH graduate, she played golf on scholarship at the University of Miami for two years and enjoyed an outstanding amateur career. Waynick, the 1983 Virginia State Women's Amateur champion, also has five Roanoke City-County women's titles to her credit.

One of her more memorable feats came in the national women's amateur tournament when she defeated the California state champion before losing to Nancy Lopez in the third round.

Waynick began her club pro career at Woodsland Country Club in Tamarack, Fla. and moved to Briarwood as an assistant in March 1986. When the head pro took another job, Waynick was named interim pro.

Despite being a woman at the male-dominated, exclusive Briarwood, mostly a club of retired millionaires, Waynick received the backing of the membership of 750 and soon became the head pro on a full-time basis.

Waynick has been a Class A member of the LPGA for several years and is scheduled to get her Class A PGA card later this month.

Despite once having pro tour ambitions, Waynick said she is happy at her present situation.

"I love what I am doing," she said during a recent telephone conversation from her headquarters in Sun City. "It's hard work and it keeps me busy. I work six days a week and then take my day off to do my laundry.
