PROGRESS PARKING LOT GETTING AN OVERHAUL
Longtime Blacksburg residents probably won't recognize the Progress Street
parking lot downtown when construction crews are finished with it this summer.
The $250,000 overhaul, scheduled for completion in mid-August, includes
repaving the entire lot, adding trees, shrubbery and a few benches, covering
the small stream that runs through it, installing street lights and walkways,
and increasing the number of public parking spaces. Meter rates will go up to
25 cents an hour, with a two-hour limit.
The project - which took the concerted effort of several private property
owners and the town - also will redirect the flow of traffic in the parking
area, which many residents consider to be a hazardous maze for motorists. -
