PLEA BARGAIN ELUDES BARRY AS TRIAL NEARS

Mayor Marion Barry returned to court Thursday, a day after announcing he wouldn't seek re-election, as supporters called anew for a plea arrangement that would spare him a jail term.

There was no indication his announcement had spurred any plea-bargaining discussions, as supporters had hoped.

There was "no movement at all" toward an agreement that would allow Barry to plead guilty to a misdemeanor, said one source close to Barry's defense team.

Barry's supporters have said the mayor bowed out of the race in part because he hoped such a move would elicit sympathy from the jury in his trial or push his attorney and Stephens to reach an agreement before testimony starts next week.
