Evans, a 6-foot-7 forward from Willow Ridge High in Houston, was voted the most valuable player in the all-star game Thursday night after helping lead the White team to a 104-77 rout.
Evans had 17 points and 12 rebounds as the White team had five scorers in double figures. Guard Cory Alexander of the White team led the way with 18 points and added a game-high eight assists.
Evans was one of more than 25 Texans who took advantage of a ruling by that state's high school association allowing players to attend all-star camps. He and two teammates made the drive from Houston with Evans' father, Michael.
"This is supposed to be the best camp," said Evans, referring to Five-Star. "At first, I thought this was the only session we could go to, but I'll be going to Pittsburgh later in the summer."
The White team rolled to a 10-2 advantage and led by more than 20 points for most of the evening, thanks to the inside play of Evans and the work of guards Alexander and Ira Bowman, who hit his first five shots and finished with 15 points.
Jason Aber converted several early baskets off fast breaks and finished with 14 points, the same total as reserve Matt Gaudio from Wellsburg, W.Va.
Nii Richards led the Orange team with 14 points, hitting six straight shots during one stretch, and Kurt Small added 12. Small plays in the same backcourt with Richards at Good Counsel High in Wheaton, Md.
Alexander, who will play his senior year at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, was voted the most outstanding player at the camp in awards announced earlier in the day.
Small was cited as the best defensive player and best playmaker. Also recognized were 6-10 Wilfred Kirkaldy from Oak Hill as the top rebounder; 5-11 Jo Jo Outlaw from the Bronx, N.Y., for sportsmanship, and 6-4 Ira Bowman from East Orange, N.J., as the playoff MVP.
Matt Dellinger, a 6-8 rising junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., was cited as the top underclassman. ORANGE (77)
