BOND IS DENIED MAN ACCUSING IN SLAYING

A man charged with the murder of a Washington-area prostitute must remain jailed without bond, an Arlington County judge has ruled.

Judge William Winston on Thursday rejected a request to free Chander Matta, 21, of Arlington.

Matta is accused of smothering Sherry K. Larman, 26. The woman's body was discovered at an Arlington parking garage May 26.

Prosecutors said they plan to ask a grand jury to indict Matta in the slayings of Sandra Johnson, 20, and Jodie Marie Phillips, 16. All three victims died from asphyxiation, according to police.

During Thursday's bond hearing, Matta's attorney, Arthur Reynolds Jr., argued Matta could have been confined to his home and monitored with the use of electronic devices.

Matta's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 9.
