BEEPER BAN SET IN SCHOOLS

Students will be prohibited from carrying beepers and other paging devices next year on Roanoke County school property, the School Board decided Thursday.

The rule was adopted to bring county policy in line with state regulations. The state has prohibited the devices as a way to crack down on student drug dealers in larger urban areas.

School officials said they have not had a problem with the beepers in Roanoke County.

The board also voted to raise the textbook and materials fee for next year.

Pupils in first through fifth grades will have to pay $25, up from $23 this year. Students in grades six through nine will pay $27, up from $25, and students in grades 10 through 12 will pay $28, up from $26.

Kindergarten materials fees will remain unchanged at $19.50.

In other action, Deanna Gordon, who's been employed by the school system for 30 years, was named assistant superintendent. She fills the vacancy left by Ted Viars, who is retiring at the end of this month.

Gordon has been director of elementary education for the county schools since 1986.

Before that, she was elementary supervisor for science, social studies, health , reading and language arts; an assistant principal at Hardy Road and East Vinton elementary schools; and a teacher.

Gordon has a bachelor's degree from Roanoke college, a master's degree in arts and liberal studies from Hollins College and a doctorate in education administration from Virginia Tech.
