TEMPORARY LAYOFFS TO IDLE WORKERS AT DUBLIN VOLVO

About 450 workers at Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. will be furloughed over the next two weeks while the plant searches for a new vendor of fiberglass components.

The temporary layoff originally was planned for August when there normally is a seasonal slowdown.

Plant manager John Bryant said Thursday that 150 workers will be furloughed next week and 300 workers will be furloughed the following week.

"We're not doing anything permanent," Bryant said. "We usually work two shifts and we will be working one shift next week and the following week."

Bryant said the plant's old vendor is having finacial difficulties. He hopes to have a new vendor by the third week in July, when the plant reopens after two weeks of vacation.

The June furlough will replace the one planned for August, Bryant said. The plant, located in Dublin's industrial park, has about 900 workers. - Staff report
