JEFFERSON HIRED AT E.C. GLASS

Former University of Virginia and Covington High player Garland Jefferson was hired Friday as boys' basketball coach at E.C. Glass High in Lynchburg.

Jefferson, 32, was chosen from a field of 11 candidates, five of whom made it to the final round of interviews. He succeeds Willie Taylor, who had guided the Hilltoppers for 14 years.

Glass athletic director Frank Murray said Jefferson had been offered a position at Davidson College, where he would have concentrated on the recruitment of minority students. Murray said that while Jefferson coaches the Hilltoppers, he will continue to pursue a master's degree in secondary education at UVa.

A Timesland player of the year and state Group AA scoring champion, Jefferson played at UVa from 1976-80. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 4.1 points per game. His best season was 1979-80, when he averaged 5.4 points in 30 games as the Cavaliers won the National Invitation Tournament. - Staff report
