INDIANS, LANE TOP BUCS 7-3

It wasn't exactly a one-man show, but Kinston Indians center fielder Nolan Lane did a lot of damage Friday night against the Salem Buccaneers.

Lane went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs with two homers as Kinston clipped Salem 7-3 in Carolina League baseball at Municipal Field.

With two out in the first inning and the Indians leading 1-0, Lane blasted a fastball from Bucs starter Bobby Underwood (1-3) over the left-field wall for a three-run homer.

After the Bucs had cut the lead to 4-2 through three innings, Lane drove an Underwood fastball over the right-field wall for a two-run shot that made it 6-2.

"I was looking for fastballs and, luckily, I got them," said Lane, who hit a grand slam Thursday in Kinston's victory over Lynchburg. "The first one was on the inside of the plate, the second was on the outside. I just went with the pitches."

Lane also had a two-homer game against Peninsula earlier this season. He had a grand slam and seven RBI in that one.

Salem outhit Kinston 11-9, but Indians starter Jerry DiPoto (7-2) and reliever Tim Peters combined to strike out 15. Salem stranded nine runners.

Peters pitched the final three innings to pick up his first save. During one stretch he struck out six in a row.

The Bucs got two runs in the third when Flavio Williams led off with a single, went to third on a throwing error by DiPoto and scored on a single by Darwin Pennye, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Pennye scored on a fielder's choice by Mike Brewington. The Bucs still had two on with one out, but couldn't score again.

\ BUCSHOTS: Tonight's game against Kinston will start at 5 p.m. Immediately after the game two bands - The Platters and The Drifters - will perform. Tickets are $4.50, $4.00 and $3.50 and are good for the game and the concert. Paul Miller (2-2) will be on the mound for Salem and Chris Cole (0-0) will start for Kinston.
