INDIANS PULL AWAY TO VICTORY

It didn't take long for a tense, one-run baseball game to turn into a farce.

The Kinston Indians scored five runs in the seventh inning to break open a close game. And for good measure, they added six runs in the ninth and went on to 12-1 victory over the Salem Buccaneers on Sunday night at Municipal Field.

The victory kept the Indians (44-23) one game ahead of the Winston-Salem Spirits (43-24) in the Carolina League's Southern Division with three games to play in the first half of the season.

Winston-Salem opens a three-game series with the Bucs tonight, and Kinston finishes the half at home against the Frederick Keys, who have clinched the Northern Division title.

For a while Sunday, it looked as if neither team would score as Bucs starter Steve Buckholz (6-4) and Kinston starter Tommy Kramer (7-3) locked up in a pitching duel for four innings.

Then the Indians broke up their goose eggs by scoring in the top of the fifth.

Brian Johnson led off the inning with a single, then took second on a sacrifice by Ramon Bautista.

Lindsay Foster hit a low liner to Salem second baseman Glen McNabb, who appeared to have caught the ball on the fly and was starting to make a throw to second to double up Johnson. But the base umpire ruled no catch, and although McNabb immediately wheeled and threw to first he was too late to get Foster. Johnson went to third and scored on Ken Ramos' single up the middle.

McNabb later was thrown out of the game when he argued that he had caught the ball.

The Bucs had two on with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Greg Sims hit into an inning-ending double play.

Kinston put away the game in the seventh when they scored five runs on three hits against Buckholz. The Bucs didn't help themselves by making two errors in the inning. The big hit was a two-run single by designated hitter Jesse Levis.

The Indians roughed up Salem relievers for six runs on seven hits in the ninth. Johnson had a two-run triple in the inning and Ramos drove in two with a double.

The Bucs' run came in the bottom of the ninth when Darwin Pennye led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Mike Huyler.
