5 INJURED IN WEEKEND ATTACKS

Five people were injured over the weekend in separate attacks that involved knives, a baseball bat and a metal folding chair, Roanoke police said today.

Police reported the following incidents:

Justin Shane Ark, 19, of Bower Road Southwest, told police that he was arguing with two men in front of an apartment in the 2300 block of Winthrop Avenue Southwest at 2:10 a.m. Sunday when he was struck with a baseball bat.

Ark was taken to Lewis-Gale Hospital with injuries to his forehead and left ear. An investigation is continuing.

Also on the 2300 block of Winthrop Avenue, Gary Gene Gentry, 20, of the 800 block of Jamison Avenue Southeast, was stabbed several times in an argument with several men.

Police found Gentry lying in front of an apartment complex about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. He was listed in stable condition today at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A suspect told police that he, Gentry and two other people were drinking when Gentry was attacked by all three men. An investigation is continuing.

Ross R. Campbell, 23, of Vinton was stabbed after he got into an argument with several people as he left a Southeast Roanoke bar about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Campbell's wife said she saw him get into a fight with several men in the parking lot. The men ran to the next block. She next saw her husband holding on to a fence, suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest and back.

Police said Campbell was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but hospital officials had no information on his condition today.

William McKinnley Ross, 43, of the 1500 block of 16th Street Northwest, told police he was talking to his neighbor at his home in what he thought was a joking manner when the man became angry.

Ross was struck in the head with a metal folding chair and was taken to Community Hospital.

Police arrested Anthony Lee Brown, 18, in the living room of his nearby home and charged him with malicious wounding.

Anthony Scott Carter, 20, of Highland Avenue Southwest, was stabbed several times in an argument with a woman at a Northwest Roanoke convenience store.

Police said Carter began to argue with Tammy Denise Barrett, 20, about 10:45 p.m. Sunday at the 7-Eleven store on McDowell Avenue.

Carter pulled a pocketknife, dropped it, and was stabbed several times with his weapon. Barrett was charged with malicious wounding.
