APCO SEEKING SMALL RATE CUT

Lower fuel costs for Appalachian Power Co. will give average customers of the utility a reduction of 46 cents a month in their power bills.

Apco on Monday asked the State Corporation Commission to approve the reduction of 0.8 percent or $5 million, effective Aug. 28.

If approved, the fuel-factor reduction will partially offset an interim increase of $5.60 per month to be placed in effect, subject to refund, at the end of August. The SCC has scheduled a Sept. 13 hearing on Apco's 8.3 percent general rate increase request.

This is the seventh year since 1982 that Apco has had a lower fuel factor in its Virginia rates.

A year ago, Apco's fuel rate was reduced $1.06 per month, or 2.3 percent. The company credited that reduction to renegotiation of coal contracts and an effort to use more coal from the spot market. - Staff report
