BEYER TO VISIT FOR SENIORS, YOUTH

Lt. Gov. Donald Beyer will help a Southwest Virginia senior-citizen agency celebrate its 15th anniversary Friday, and will take part Saturday in a program at Seven Mile Ford on linking education and industry.

Beyer will give an address at 11 a.m. Friday at Patrick Henry High School during a day of activities planned for about 500 senior citizens by the District 3 Governmental Cooperative.

He also will deliver the agency's one-millionth home-delivered meal that day. The program provides five home-delivered meals each week to nearly 700 homebound people in Washington, Smyth, Wythe, Carroll and Grayson counties and the cities of Bristol and Galax.

Saturday, Beyer will give the opening speech at 9:30 a.m. at the Smyth County Vocational School at a conference on cooperation between industry and education. Registration will start at 9 a.m.

Robert S. Baumgardner, director of apprenticeship with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, will give an overview of the state apprenticeship program. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, will conclude the opening remarks.

The conference is sponsored by the Smyth County Educational Foundation and Smyth County Chamber of Commerce. Panelists for the rest of the program include state Sen. William Wampler Jr., R-Bristol; W.L. "Bill" Lemmon, chairman of the Governor's Commission on Educational Opportunities for All Virginians; James P. Jones, member of the state Board of Education; Ed Whitmore, Dominion Bank; Mel Kent, Brunswick Corp.; James Holman, owner, Smyth County Machine and Welding Inc.; George Eanes, supervisor of apprenticeship-related instruction at Wytheville Community College; Teresa A. Sigafoose, apprenticeship field supervisor, Department of Labor and Industry; and Pat Moore, apprenticeship field representative.
