MOST VIRGINIA CONGRESSMEN EXPECTED TO BACK AMENDMENT

Here is the survey by The Associated Press of members of Congress on the attempt to amend the Constitution to prohibit desecration of the flag.

A "yes" denotes support for the amendment supported by President Bush. A "no" indicates opposition to the amendment.

An "und" denotes members who say they are undecided. An "X" denotes those who were not available for comment or would not comment or disclose their position.

An "LnY" denotes leaning yes and an "LnN" denotes leaning no.

There were 54 senators in favor of the amendment, four leaning in favor, 23 opposed and one leaning no.

Eighteen senators said they were undecided.

Virginia Sens. Charles Robb, D, and John Warner, R, both said they would vote for the amendment.

There were 242 members of the House in favor of the amendment, 11 leaning in favor, 109 opposed and six leaning against. Fifty-four were undecided and 11 were not available.

There are two vacancies in the 435-member House.

Virginia Republicans - Rep. Herbert Bateman, Newport News, LnY; Rep. Thomas Bliley, Richmond, yes; Rep. Stanford Parris, Fairfax County, yes; Rep. French Slaughter, Culpeper, yes; Rep. Frank Wolf, Fairfax County, yes.
