RADFORD LAUNCHES SEARCH

Not long after Radford University announced that Charlene Curtis was leaving to become the women's basketball coach at Temple, talk turned to the search for a successor.

"The search is open - wide-open - and the time frame is ASAP [as soon as possible]," said Chuck Taylor, Radford's athletic director.

The position will be advertised in the next edition of the NCAA News, and the deadline for applications is July 13. Taylor said there is likely to be a search committee, although he has not had time to put one together.

Taylor said he does not have a list of potential candidates. "But any athletic director or personnel director at any level who is conducting a search has to have some idea who the quality individuals in the field are," he said. "This is an attractive job, and I expect that we will have a lot of attractive candidates."

Early speculation centered on several likely candidates, including two who already are on the Radford staff - Vernon Claytor and Stacy Cox. Other potential applicants are Penn State assistant Dan Durkin and Kentucky assistant Jerry McLaughlin.

Other possibilities include virtually the entire Roanoke College women's basketball staff, all of whom have Radford ties. The most prominent is head coach Susan Dunagan, who graduated from Radford in 1970 and holds two degrees from the university. Dunagan has a 167-60 record in nine seasons at Roanoke, and she was 124-39 at Cave Spring High before moving to the collegiate ranks.

Both of Dunagan's assistants, Kathy Bocock and Lynn Richmond, are former Radford players.

Claytor, like Curtis a graduate of William Fleming High, was on the Radford staff all six years Curtis was at the school. The Highlanders were 121-56 in that span.

Claytor said Tuesday that he would not make any plans until he had a lengthy discussion with Curtis. She is assisting with the U.S. select-team trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"I really need to talk with her," he said. "Joining her staff at Temple may be an option, I might be interested in the [head coaching] job here or I might look into other options."

Joining Curtis at Temple also may be an option for Cox.

"I haven't signed anything as far as going to Temple goes," she said. "This has been a very busy time for me. I'm helping run the Five-Star camp here, and all this with Charlene happened so quickly I really haven't had time to sit down and think about it. I'm keeping my options open. I'm not ruling out anything."

Claytor said he believed competition would be intense for the Radford job.

"I'd think there's going to be 150-200 applicants for this job," he said. "The program here is well-respected and very well-supported. The facilities are great. . . . It's a great job."
