OUTDOOR DRAMA READY FOR OPENING

"The Trail of the Lonesome Pine," the longest-running outdoor drama in the state, will open Thursday for its summer run.

The play, based on the novel by John Fox Jr., will be performed each Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. through Aug. 25. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $4 for children, with special group prices available.

First performed in 1964, the play revolves around the love story of a mountain girl named June Tolliver and a mining engineer from the East in the era following the discovery of coal and iron ore in Southwest Virginia.

Further information is available by writing to June Tolliver Playhouse, Drawer 1976, Big Stone Gap 24219, or telephoning 523-2060 or 523-1235.

Other attractions in Big Stone Gap include the June Tolliver House and Craft Shop, in the 19th-century home where the young woman on whom Fox based his June Tolliver character actually lived while attending school in Big Stone Gap, and the John Fox Jr. Museum housed in a building constructed in 1888.

The house and craft shop, located next to the outdoor drama stage, is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is free. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children.
