U.S. BARRED FROM HOSTING FUTURE AIDS MEETINGS

Future international AIDS meetings won't be held in the United States and other countries that restrict the entry of people infected with the AIDS virus, a top conference official said Wednesday.

"It's not appropriate to hold the conference in countries that have restrictions," said Dr. Paul Volberding of the University of California.

Volberding is the incoming president of the International AIDS Society, which picks the sites for the annual AIDS meeting.

Volberding said that Canada, Japan and Australia are among other countries that will be barred from being hosts of the meeting because of similar restrictions on travel by foreigners infected with the AIDS virus.

In 1987, the U.S. Senate voted 97-0 to add HIV infection to the list of medical conditions for which foreigners can be denied visas.

The 1992 AIDS meeting is scheduled to be sponsored by Harvard University in Boston. Last week, Harvard officials threatened to withdraw from the meeting unless the travel rules are changed.

The meeting is scheduled to be held in Florence, Italy, next year and in Berlin in 1993.
