BUCS END FIRST HALF WITH 13-9 SETBACK

In a case of appropriate endings, the Salem Buccaneers concluded the first half of their Carolina League baseball season in a fashion befitting the way the season has gone for them.

Wednesday night at Municipal Field, the Bucs once again gave away a game they might have won.

The Winston-Salem Spirits took advantage of Salem errors to score six runs with two outs in the seventh inning and rallied to a 13-9 win.

"That game kind of summed [the first half] up," said Bucs manager Stan Cliburn. "It was the same old tune."

With Salem leading 9-7 in the seventh, consecutive errors by second baseman Glen McNabb and shortstop Mike Huyler allowed the Spirits to tie the score.

After Brent Honeywell relieved Mike Pomeranz, Elvin Paulino untied the game with three-run homer to right field. Then Gary Scott followed with a solo shot to make it 13-9.

The good news for the Bucs, who finished the first half with a 25-46 record, is that when they resume play Friday at Peninsula, their record will 0-0 just like everybody else in the league.

"Anytime you have halves, it's a chance to change things," Cliburn said. "When you have a disappointing half like we did, it's nice to have a chance to start over."

\ BUCSHOTS: Glen McNabb will put today's day off to good use. He's getting married. . . . Paul Miller (3-2) will try to get the Bucs off to a positive start when he goes to the mound against Peninsula.
