SCRUTINIZE POLICE TRANSFERS

I CONGRATULATE Roanoke County for its diligent search for a police chief. The choice of John Cease will enable it to have the finest county police department in the commonwealth.

It would be a terrible shame if Cease and Mr. Hodge fail to follow through after such a promising start. Wholesale transfers from the present sheriff's department to the new county police department should not be allowed.

Both transfer applications and new applications should be scrutinized with the same thoroughness used in selecting Cease. Use of these guidelines will weed out the overzealous, misfit and unfit.
