DRIVER KILLED IN COLLISION IN WYTHE

A pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 77 in Wythe County late Wednesday collided with another truck, killing the California man driving that truck.

Charles Arthur Ranson, 48, died at Wythe County Community Hospital about an hour after the 11:15 p.m. wreck.

Charges are pending against Willis Harrison, who was not seriously injured, a state police dispatcher said.

Harrison had been driving a Chevrolet pickup truck south in the northbound lanes of I-77 about a mile north of Poplar Camp, police said. Ranson was driving north in a Jeep Cherokee and swerved to avoid Harrison's truck. The two trucks sideswiped each other, the dispatcher said.
