BUSINESS, INDUSTRY LEADERS ARE RECRUITED FOR UNITED WAY

United Way of Roanoke Valley has recruited 18 leaders for its campaign cabinet to work with businesses, organizations and individuals during the fall fund-raising effort.

William F. Hawkins, president of ProForma Mid-Atlantic, is campaign vice chairman.

Richard L. Popp, president of FiberCom Inc., is coordinating the Pacesetter Campaign.

William H. Fulton, branch manager of IBM Corp., is chairing the Major Firms Unit.

Claude L. Reynolds, administrative assistant of the Roanoke Division of Appalachian Power Co., is chairing the Commercial Unit, which has been expanded to include four divisions.

Douglas Waters, regional executive officer for Sovran Bank, is chairing Commercial I.

Harry W. Kessler III, private banking officer for Signet Bank, is chairing Commercial II.

W. Mark Kates, vice president for commercial lending at CorEast Savings Bank, is chairing Commercial III.

Gini Ross, systems engineer for IBM Corp., is chairing Commercial IV.

Briggs Andrews, general counsel for Carilion Health Systems, is coordinating efforts for Education, Local Government and Social Services.

Reginald K. Hutcherson, chairman of the board of CorEast Savings Bank, is chairing the Direct Marketing Unit.

Patrick N. Shaffner, president and chief executive officer of Sherertz, Franklin, Crawford, Shaffner Inc., leads the Professional Unit.

Glenn O. Thornhill Jr., president of Maid Bess Corp., heads the President's Circle Program, in addition to his duties as campaign chairman. This program consists of individuals or couples who contribute $1,000 or more to the United Way.

Wendy O'Neil, executive director of YWCA of Roanoke Valley, heads the Communications Committee, which is responsible for year-round promotion of the United Way.

Daniel S. Anderson Jr., general chairman of the International Brotherhood of Firemen and Oilers, is chairing the Labor Participation Committee.

Joseph E. Stephenson, president of Shenandoah Life Insurance Co., is chairing Loaned Executive Recruitment. This program provides key executives from Roanoke Valley companies to work full-time at the United Way during the campaign while their employers continue to pay their salaries.

Edward E. Harriman Jr., director of corporate and foundation relations for Hollins College, is coordinating the Loaned Executive Training Program.

Chip Cartwright, forest supervisor of the Jefferson National Forest, is chairing the Combined Federal Campaign.

Emily Arthur, district supervisor of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, is chairing the State Combined Campaign.
