NEW CASTLE BUDGET INCREASEES

The town of New Castle has adopted a $30,622 municipal budget that is about $2,000 larger than the one for the current fiscal year.

The budget for the current fiscal year is $28,530.

Mayor Thomas Zimmerman said that even though the budget, adopted Monday, is larger, the town's tax rate remains the same. The real-estate levy is 5 cents per $100 of assessed value, and the personal property levy is 13 cents per $100.

Local revenue is expected to increase from $19,680 to $21,972, but funds from the state are expected to drop from $850 to $650. Most of the revenue from the state comes from sales tax and Alcoholic Beverage Control receipts.

The town expects to increase spending for public works from $16,650 in the current budget to $18,742 in the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Public works consist mostly of snow removal, upkeep of sidewalks and general maintenance of other town-owned property.
