The budget includes a 5 percent pay raise for town employees and the creation of a part-time position to ease the workload in town offices. Stipends for council members were raised to $800; Mayor Clarence Taylor's stipend was raised to $1,200.
Real estate, personal property and consumer utility taxes remained unchanged. Neither were there any increases in water or sewage charges.
Pearisburg's budget discussions had been dominated by debate over whether the town should continue to pay the lion's share of costs for the fire department and library.
The town contends that both services are used more by Giles County residents than by town residents.
In response to the problems of funding the town fire department, the new budget allows $5,000 to be deposited each year in a floating fund that will be used to buy a new fire truck in the future.
The town's contribution to the library was essentially unchanged from last year, while the county increased its contribution to the library from $4,500 in 1989-90 to $5,000 in the coming year.
Town Manager Keith Vittum said, however, that the county's 1990-91 contribution actually represents a smaller proportion of the library budget.
The new budget also reflects the first of 20 annual payments of $125,000 for the town's new sewage-treatment plant.
