CALIF. MAN KILLED IN WYTHE CAR CRASH

A 48-year old California man was killed Wednesday night in a head-on collision on Interstate 77 with a vehicle traveling the wrong way.

The accident happened at 11:15 p.m. in Wythe County at the south end of the New River bridge.

The victim was Charles Arthur Ranson of Ojai, Calif., who died at Wythe County Community Hospital shortly after midnight. His wife, Lorraine Ranson, a passenger in the car, escaped serious injury.

Trooper B.H. Martin said Ranson swerved in an attempt to avoid the pickup truck, and his vehicle was hit on the driver's side.

The driver of the pickup, Willis Harrison, 49, of Mooresville, N.C., was admitted to the hospital for observation.
