A passerby notified police shortly after 5 a.m. that a man had been shot in Central Park. The victim, described only as a black man in his 20s, was hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said.
A note was found nearby, said a police source speaking on condition of anonymity. The note's contents were not revealed, but the source said it led detectives to believe the Zodiac gunman may be linked to the Manhattan shooting.
All four shootings occurred on Thursdays and before dawn.
The gunman, in three cryptic notes referring to the signs of the Zodiac, claimed responsibility for three shootings since March 8. Two were in the same Brooklyn neighborhood, one in an adjoining Queens neighborhood.
Although the gunman's notes indicated he had murdered his victims, the wounded men, two Hispanics and a white, survived.
