Richard Nixon and the "vivacious young woman with titian hair" he met at a theater audition in Whittier, Calif., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Thursday surrounded by their children and grandchildren.

The former president and his wife, Pat, posed for a golden anniversary portrait in the woodsy panorama that extends from the back of their house in Saddle River, N.J.

They usually celebrate special occasions with only their immediate family, which includes Edward and Tricia Cox and David and Julie Eisenhower. The Eisenhowers have three children, Jennie, 11; Alex, 9; and Melanie, 6. The Coxes' son Christopher is 11.

Despite illnesses over the years, including a major stroke in 1976 and a mild one in 1983, Pat Nixon looked well. She was slender, wearing her blond hair in much the style that it was in the White House. She walked unaided, carried on a genial conversation and smiled readily for the camera.

William Seidman, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., suffered a separated pelvis during a horseback riding accident at his New Mexico ranch, his office said Thursday.

Seidman, who plans to retire after June 30, underwent successful surgery after Wednesday's accident, an official in his Washington, D.C., office said. Details of the accident were not disclosed.

He was listed in satisfactory condition at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, a nursing supervisor said.

Joan Rivers kicked in $1,000 for a wedding reception that was turned into a party for the homeless after the groom-to-be got cold feet.

Rivers offered the money for the Saturday party when would-be bride Kathleen Gooley appeared on the comedian's syndicated talk show.

Gooley, 41, stood to lose the $4,000 deposit given to the caterer, so she decided to throw a party for the homeless. However, the deposit wasn't enough to invite 150 people from shelters and drug rehabilitation centers as she had hoped.
