CITY STUDENTS IMPROVE SCORES ON LITERACY TESTS

Roanoke students performed better on literacy tests this year, according to charts reviewed by School Board members Thursday.

Scores for other school districts in Virginia will not be released until next week.

Superintendent Frank Tota said that while students were expected to score 4 percentile points under the 50 percentile national average, they scored in the 49th percentile. The 50th percentile is by definition the national average.

He credited the school system with doing more with less. Nationally, 20 percent of all students are considered economically disadvantaged, while the percentage for Roanoke is 45, he said.

Administrative changes for the 1990-91 academic year also were announced at Thursday's meeting.

The changes announced included:

Beverly Burks, assistant principal of Addison Middle School, was named principal.

Fallon Park Elementary Principal Carroll Smith was named principal of Oakland Elementary.

Tom Donleavy, principal at Fishburn Park and Wasena elementary schools, was appointed full-time principal of Fishburn Park.

Crystal Spring Principal William Lalik was named full-time principal of Wasena Elementary.

Garden City Principal Linda Wright was named principal of Westside Elementary.

Madison Middle School Principal Charles Kennedy was appointed Jackson Middle School principal.

Fairview Elementary Principal Philip Jepson was appointed Madison Middle School principal.

Virginia Heights Elementary Principal Gary Galbreath was appointed Garden City Elementary principal.
