SARA LEE TO EXPAND IN GALAX

Sara Lee Knit Products officials reported plans to expand the Galax plant during a dedication of a Hillsville sewing plant Thursday. The Galax unit is being restructured to add 200,000 pounds of manufactured cut parts to the weekly production of 600,000 pounds by early next year, said Bill Huffman, personnel manager at Galax. About 40 employees probably will be added to the work force of 720 in the next year, he said.

The new Hillsville plant has 445 employees who make men's and boys' T-shirts. Its total employment is expected to reach 850 at full production. Cut parts for the Hillsville and Sparta plants are made in Galax.
