WHOLESALE MILK PRICES TO INCREASE

Wholesale milk prices in Virginia will rise July 1 but the increase, of 40 cents per 100 pounds, is not likely to affect consumers, state Milk Commission administrator C.H. Coleman said Friday.

The increase will return wholesale prices to the level before a drop two months ago, which also did not affect retail costs.

The May market-basket survey by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services showed in the Roanoke area a half-gallon of homogenized fresh Grade A milk cost an average of $1.41.

The new producer prices per 100 pounds of 3.5 percent butterfat milk will be $16.76 for the area that includes Roanoke and Lynchburg and $16.56 for the Bristol area.

A hundredweight of milk equals 11.62 gallons.
