BUCS START 2ND HALF WITH 3-2 VICTORY

The Salem Buccaneers got the second half of the Carolina League baseball season started on the right foot with a 3-2 victory over the Prince William Cannons on Friday night.

On the first pitch of the game, Salem's Greg Sims singled. Bruce Schreiber followed with a single to left field, moving Sims to third. Sims then scored on a wild pitch by Gerald Nielsen (4-5). Mike Brewington doubled down the third-base line to score Schreiber and give the Bucs an early 2-0 lead.

The Bucs got their final run in the fifth when Mike Huyler and Ben Shelton singled. Glen McNabb, who got married the day before, grounded to second to advance Huyler. Huyler scored when Prince William's Russ Davis made an error on Greg Sims' grounder.

The Cannons scored in the fourth inning when Sherman Obando doubled and scored on a double by Kiki Hernandez, who was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple. Dave Howell followed with a solo homer.

Salem pitcher Paul Miller (4-2) retired 16 of last 18 batters he faced, including 10 in a row.

\ BUCSHOTS: Prince William's Jim Wiley (2-5, 4.11 ERA) goes against Steve Buckholz (6-4, 4.47 ERA) in tonights game. . . . Friday night's game was delayed nearly an hour and a half by a thunderstorm.
