ACCIDENTS CLAIM LIVES OF PASSENGER IN CAR, MOTORCYCLE DRIVER

A Covington man died of crash injuries Thursday after seven days in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

David Rhea, 22, was a passenger in a car that flipped off the road at the intersection of U.S. 220 and Virginia 670 on June 17. As the car reached an embankment, Rhea was partially ejected from the vehicle and was trapped underneath it, state police said.

According to police, the driver, who apparently dozed off and lost control of the vehicle, did not suffer serious injury.

Rhea was flown to Roanoke Memorial where he died of head injuries Thursday.

In another road accident, a West Virginia resident was killed Thursday when his motorcycle ran into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County, police said.

Larry David Welch, of Clay, W.Va., was pronounced dead at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Welch was traveling behind friends who were riding in a pickup truck, according to state police. The pickup passed the tractor-trailer and he tried to follow.

Police said Welch was traveling much faster than the tractor-trailer, which was going about 25 mph.
