7,000 PENGUINS DIE IN MYSTERY STAMPEDE

King penguins at a rookery on a nearby island stampeded, killing 7,000 of the birds, and officials said Sunday they were investigating the mysterious occurrence.

"We don't know at this stage why they stampeded - we have not observed this type of behavior before," a spokesman for the Australian State Parks Wildlife and Heritage Ministry said.
