MAN ACCUSED IN SLAYING OF BOY ATTEMPTS SUICIDE

A Hartwood man accused of torturing and killing a youth was listed in fair condition Monday at Prince William Hospital after authorities said he tried to commit suicide in his jail cell.

Richard Kiekbusch, superintendent of the county adult detention center, said Michael Carl George, 32, slashed his throat early Sunday evening with a blade broken from a plastic disposable razor.

"There is no way the staff could have anticipated or stopped George from taking the action he did," Kiekbusch said. "The disposable razors have been routinely issued to inmates as part of their personal grooming package."

He would not say whether George had written a suicide note.

The boy George is accused of killing, Alexander Eugene Sztanko, 15, was last seen June 16 as he was leaving his home.

His body was found the following day.
