COUNCILWOMAN WINS IN RECOUNT

Councilwoman Polly Corn has emerged the winner of a recount from the contested May 1 election in which she finished 13 votes ahead of newcomer Jim Cox.

The recount, held Friday at Cox's request, showed a net loss for Corn of two votes.

Corn's final total was 1,109 vs. 1,098 for Cox.

Radford election officials initially believed that the election had ended in a tie, but it was discovered that some absentee ballots had not been counted.

Corn and the other election winners - Councilman-elect Gary Weddke and Mayor Tom Starnes - will be sworn in Monday.
