MOORE'S CONFIRMS MANAGER LAYOFFS

Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies laid off some of its middle-management personnel Tuesday.

Norman Darrer, president of Moore's, confirmed the layoffs but said the exact figure was "confidential to us."

He said it was "nowhere near" the 34 reported to the newspaper by an anonymous caller.

The Roanoke-based chain took the action after a review of its management structure, he said.

Darrer said Moore's had to make "a prudent business decision" about which positions were necessary to support sales and which were desirable but not crucial.

The 59-store chain was purchased in September by Harrisons & Crosfield plc, a British company based in London, for a reported $70 million.

Moore's became a part of the British company's Harcros Timber and Building Supplies division.

At the time of the sale, Moore's had 2,300 employees, about 450 of them in the Roanoke Valley.

Of the Roanoke employees, about 190 worked in the general office on Lee Highway, 100 at a distribution facility at Roanoke Industrial Center and 160 at the three stores in the valley.

Darrer said Moore's still has more than 2,000 employees, of whom more than 400 work in the Roanoke Valley. - Staff report
