LA. SENATE PASSES TOUGH ABORTION BILL

The Louisiana Senate on Tuesday approved a bill prohibiting abortion even in cases of rape and incest, hoping to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade decision.

The bill, passed by the House last week, would send doctors who perform abortions to prison for 10 years of hard labor. It would be the toughest state abortion law in the country.

The House will get the bill again, possibly as early as today, to vote on amendments the Senate added to strengthen provisions protecting the life of the mother.

Then it would head to Gov. Buddy Roemer, who has promised to veto the bill in its present form.

Supporters say they can muster the two-thirds vote of both houses to override a veto if necessary.

Tuesday's Senate vote on final passage was 24-15.
