BUCS FALTER IN NINTH, LOSE 5-4 TO LYNCHBURG

James Byrd led off the Lynchburg ninth with a single. He reached second on a balk by Tim McDowell and moved to third on a sacrifice fly.

Mike Pomeranz came on in relief of McDowell (3-5) and Blosser laced his RBI single to left.

The Red Sox got back-to-back home runs from Scott Powers and Paul Williams in the second inning off starter Bobby Underwood. Chris Whitehead also took Underwood deep to start the fourth inning.

The Bucs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-3 after four.

Rennie Scott (5-3) earned the win in relief by throwing three straight screwballs to strike out pinch-hitter Tim Hines.

\ BUCSHOTS: Salem will send Paul Miller (4-2) to the mound against Ken Ryan (2-7) in tonight's final game of the series.
