Saying the church has suffered "serious harm" from open criticism, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ordered theologians to uphold its teaching or keep quiet.
"To succumb to the temptation of dissent . . . is to allow the leaven of infidelity to the Holy Spirit to start to work," the commission said in a 28-page document approved by Pope John Paul II.
