FRANCE VOTES TO BAN LIQUOR, TOBACCO ADS

The National Assembly today approved a ban on all tobacco advertising and most liquor advertising starting in 1993.

The law, approved on a 315-149 vote, forbids all direct or indirect advertising for tobacco products, including sponsorship of sports and cultural events.

Legislators from wine-growing regions succeeded in excluding most wines from the ban on liquor advertising.

According to the government, smoking causes 65,000 deaths and alcoholism 45,000 deaths each year in France.
