KIWANIS AWARDS MAN FOR HEROIC TRAIN RESCUE

An engineer from Virginia who jumped from a freight train he was riding and pushed two young brothers away from its path has been honored by Kiwanis International for his heroism.

The service organization, concluding its convention in St. Louis on Wednesday, awarded the Robert P. Connelly medal to Anthony Falzo of Alexandria. Thanks to Falzo, the younger of the two brothers, 18 months old, escaped with only scratches to his forehead and chin after being struck by the train's snow plow.

The Connelly medal is awarded to individuals risking physical harm or death on behalf of others.

Kiwanis began awarding the medal after Robert Connelly, 32, a member in Lisle, Ill., lost his life in 1966 in an effort to rescue a disabled woman who had fallen into the path of an onrushing passenger train. Both were killed.

More than 14,000 members attended the convention, electing W.J. "Wil" Blechman of Miami president and making John Morton of Berlin, N.H., president-elect.
