AT&T PROJECTS LOWER 2ND-QUARTER EARNINGS

American Telephone & Telegraph Co. has announced that its second-quarter earnings are likely to be lower than last year's, and that the company might have difficulty meeting its own targets for earnings growth this year.

AT&T stock, which is more widely held than that of any other American company, dropped on Wednesday $2.125 a share, to close at $39.125.

A sluggish economy and, to a lesser extent, conditions in the telephone equipment market were responsible for weak equipment sales, company officials said.
