GOLDEN RULE WINNERS NAMED

Two Roanoke-area volunteers and one voluntary organization have been named as winners of the JCPenney Golden Rule Awards for service to the community.

Larry Rex Hale of Craig County Emergency Medical Services won the individual award. Hale formed the emergency service in 1977. He is a paramedic, E.M.S. lay instructor and certified life-support provider who has flown many hours with Life-Guard 10, the rescue helicopter.

The Roanoke Memorial Hospital Hospice volunteers received the group award. The hospice volunteers served more than 140 patients in 1989, representing more than 1,800 volunteered hours. They provide emotional and bereavement support to terminally ill patients and their families. Martha J. Hunter, volunteer coordinator, accepted the award on behalf of the group.

Eric Dale McElroy won the youth award. He has volunteered service at the Science Museum of Western Virginia, where he has set up exhibits, given presentations and served as an usher. He also has helped with programs, raised funds and supervised campers at Camp Virginia Jaycee.

Five finalists also were honored for volunteer service to the community. They are Jan Barber of the Community Awareness Council, Ted Bauer of Catawba Hospital, Keith Jones of the Easter Seal Society of Virginia, Katy Scott of the New River Valley Hospice, and the West End United Methodist Church volunteers.

The winners each received an engraved bronze sculpture of the Golden Rule Award and a $1,000 contribution from JCPenney to their service organization. The finalists received $250 grants for their organizations.
