IN SCHOOL

SALLY MILLER has been selected to participate in the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund-sponsored Intensive Journalistic Writing Institute Miller at Virginia Commonwealth University for the summer. As one of the 12 teachers selected for the program across the state, Miller will design a high school course of study for Advanced Placement Journalism, a course recently added to the state's official course listing.

Miller teaches speech and drama, English and religion at Roanoke Catholic School.

\ ROANOKE COUNTY has been recognized for the success of its Chapter 1 reading program by the U.S. Department of Education Secretary Lauro Cavazos. As part of the International Reading Association Convention, a certificate of achievement was presented during an awards luncheon in Atlanta, Ga.

Roanoke County was noted for its success in 12 areas considered essential for an effective compensatory program, including a clear program goal and objective, strong leadership, and closely monitored student progress.
