The three closed out their junior-high careers this spring by winning track titles in the Roanoke Valley Junior High League. It was the third sport in which each of the three won all-star honors. All three were members of Hidden Valley's undefeated football team. The Barbers won individual titles for the Eagles as the school walked away with league wrestling honors. Tuggle made the all-star team in basketball.
The Hidden Valley boys' track team, coached by Squeaky Valentine, won 10 of 15 titles.
Meanwhile, the Hidden Valley girls, coached by Gordon McLeod, captured their fourth straight championship. McLeod was assisted by Melissa Campbell and Sandy Karsten. The track title added to the championships the Eagles previously had won this season in basketball and volleyball.
Tiki Barber won three individual track events - long jump (20-8 3/4), 100 meters (11.9) and triple jump (42-11 1/2). He also ran on two winning relay teams. Ronde Barber took two first places - 110-meter high hurdles (15.2) and 300-meter hurdles (42.2). He ran on two winning relay teams.
Tuggle was a double winner, taking the high jump (5-4) and 800 meters (2:11.5). He ran on one winning relay team.
Hidden Valley won all three relays. The 800-meter relay team was composed of Chris Vaughan, Chris Niedzwiecki, Ashley Valentine and Tiki Barber, and had a time of 1:40.9. The 400-meter relay was run by Vaughan, Valentine, Danny Rosato and Tiki Barber, and had a time of :47.4. The 1,600-meter team had a time of 3:50.9 and was run by Vaughan, Tuggle, Niedzwiecki and Ronde Barber.
Northside had a double winner in Zach Penney, who took the 400 meters in 54.4 and the 200 meters in 24.8. Walter Derey of Northside was the winner in the discus with a toss of 145-8. He is the only repeat champion.
Cave Spring had two winners and the only eighth-grade champions. Joey Philpott took the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:56.3 while Mike Richards won the shot with a toss of 46-2.
Hidden Valley's Aimee Beightol, a seventh-grader, showed signs of future greatness by winning the 100 meters (13.4) and the 200 meters (28.3). She also was third in the long jump and ran a leg on the second-place 400-meter relay team.
Ninth-grader Sara O'Neal was a double winner for the second year as she took the 110-meter high hurdles (17.0) and the 400-meters (1:04.8). She also ran a leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay and placed third in the high jump.
The Eagles' other winners are ninth-grader Kelly Dierker and eighth-grader Emily Rakes. Dierker won the discus with a toss of 73-3 and placed fourth in the shot. Rakes won the high jump with a leap of 5-1. She was second in the hurdles, fourth in the 400 meters and ran a leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay team.
Cave Spring, which was second to Hidden Valley, had two winners. Keisha Cochran took the 1,600 meters in 5:38.1 while eighth-grader Molly Rutherford won the 800 in 2:29.7.
The other winners were Franklin County's Lori Reynolds, who took the long jump in 14-10, and Northside's Brooke Briscoe, who won the shot with a toss of 26-4.
Cave Spring also took two relays. Winning the 800 meters in a time of 1:57.4 were Regina Brogan, Tracy Clay, Traci Hagie and Alicia Phoenix. The same four girls won the 400 meters in :55.0.
Hidden Valley won the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:27.5. Running were Rakes, O'Neal, Stephanie Scanlin and Susan Rowan.
