TOURNAMENT ATTRACTS TOP ANGLERS

The Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship, called the second most prestigious bass fishing event in the world, has attracted 40 of the country's top amateur fishermen to Smith Mountain Lake for three days of competition, Thursday through Saturday.

The winner - the man who weighs the heaviest total of bass - is named B.A.S.S. Federation Angler of the Year.

The winner also receives $7,000, but the big prize is a berth in the BASS Masters Classic, the World Series of bass fishing to be held Aug. 23-25 at Richmond on the James River.

Weigh-in for the Smith Mountain event is 2:30 p.m. daily at the LancerLot in Vinton. The public is welcome, and there is no charge.

The tournament is the biggest ever held at Smith Mountain Lake and is expected to enhance the lake's national reputation among sport fishermen. The tournament will broadcast on tape delay July 29 and Sept. 9 on the Nashville Network.
