ROANOKE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE DEDICATES KITCHEN

A newly renovated kitchen was dedicated Thursday at the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia.

The dedication ceremony honored volunteers and contractors who donated time and materials to build and equip the kitchen.

The house provides a "home away from home" for families from distant communities with relatives hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment in Roanoke. In most Ronald McDonald houses, the families cook for themselves. Roanoke's house, staffed by volunteers, prepares meals for its 30 to 40 guests.

"If you have somebody in the hospital, just to . . . have your dinner here in a family atmosphere and share your burden makes a world of difference," manager Mary McKinstry said.

The kitchen was dedicated in the memory of Gary Taylor, a McDonald's owner/operator who operated a franchise in Altavista.
