N.J. GRAND JURY STUDIES KRAMER, NCSU PLAYERS

A New Jersey grand jury is studying allegations of point shaving involving a New Jersey businessman and North Carolina State basketball players, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Chuck Davis, a spokesman for the New Jersey attorney general's office, confirmed that a grand jury is investigating Denville, N.J., businessman Robert D. Kramer III.

"Point shaving is part of that investigation," Davis told the Greensboro News & Record. He declined further comment.

Kramer was identified in an ABC News report on Feb. 28 as the mastermind of an alleged point-shaving scheme involving Charles Shackleford and three unidentified former N.C. State players during the 1987-88 season. Kramer and Shackleford deny the charges.

Kramer's attorney, Gerard Hanlon, said he was surprised that a grand jury had been convened in New Jersey. He added that his client has not been called to testify.

The point-shaving allegations are part of an on-going probe by the Wake County District Attorney's office and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation. - Associated Press
