STATE AWARDS PROJECT GRANTS FOR ARTS GROUPS

Arts groups, performers and museums were among the organizations in Western Virginia awarded project grants for 1990-91 from the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

The Arts Council of Roanoke Valley will get $8,000 to help fund a performance series featuring contemporary artists. The Harrison Museum of African-American Culture in Roanoke will get $5,000 for its African-American Festival and a guest artist.

Appalshop, based at Norton, will get $9,294 to produce a documentary on efforts by the Ivanhoe community to revitalize itself after losing its major industry. The community, which lies in Wythe and Carroll counties, organized a civic league several years ago to promote its self-help effort.

The Arts and Cultural Council of the Twin Counties, which covers Carroll and Grayson counties and the city of Galax, will get $2,000 for a monthly music show and weekly radio broadcast featuring old-time and bluegrass music.

The Carter Family Memorial Music Center, at Hiltons in Scott County, will get $7,500 for use as honorariums for artists performing there.

Mountain Empire Community College, Big Stone Gap, will get $1,500 for its Slemp Gallery exhibitions.

New River Opera Theatre, Galax, will get $1,425 to produce the opera "Die Fledermaus."

Pro Art Association, Wise, will get $8,363 to stage performances for youth audiences in Wise County.

Lime Kiln Arts, Lexington, will get $3,000 for a new work titled "Blindsight."

Mountain Lake Consortium of the Wilderness Conservancy, Giles County, will get $2,662 for a criticism workshop and conference.

Also announced were salary assistance grants of $10,000 to the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra for a box office manager, $6,334 to the Harrison Museum of African-American Culture for an artistic program planner, $5,000 to Appalshop for a producer and fund-raising director, $3,030 to the Bristol Ballet Company for a ballet mistress, $1,388 to the Highland Camerata in Grayson County for a music director, $7,500 to the Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts Center at Big Stone Gap for an executive director, $8,000 to the Richlands Area Citizens for the Arts for an executive director, and $5,000 to the William King Regional Arts Center at Abingdon for a program director.
